Over-application of fertilizers has been linked to water quality problems in local waterways. Earth-friendly fertilizers can reduce the problem by building turf density and health while minimizing the risk of excess nutrients such as phosphorus. Local hardware and garden centers are helping by placing a bright green “Earth-Friendly Fertilizer” sticker on designated bags.
Recommended fertilizers have more than 50% slow-release nitrogen, low or no phosphorus and do not contain herbicides for weed-control.
