Administration Division

The Administration Division works to reduce deaths, injuries, and property loss from fire, hazardous material incidents, emergency medical situations, and other disaster / emergencies.

Fire Chief Duties & Responsibilities

The Fire Chief directs the planning and development of all Fire Department programs. In addition, the Fire Chief must keep abreast of the latest fire techniques to develop policies that can improve and enhance the operations of the department. This will ensure that the Fire Department is providing the finest fire extinguishment and emergency medical service available to the City’s residents.

The Fire Chief also serves as a liaison to the Board of Code Appeals. Within the department, he conducts weekly briefing sessions with divisional managers, holds monthly meetings with staff, and conducts semi-annual meetings with all Department officers. Maintaining discipline and adherence to Fire Department policies rests with the Fire Chief.

Division Duties & Responsibilities

The Fire Administration activity is responsible for supervising the prevention and extinguishment of fires and the protection of life and property against the hazards of fire in the City of Sterling Heights. This activity includes all of the funding support of the Training Division, which is headed by the Chief of Training.

Records & Budget Management

Resource management is another part of administration. Preparing the annual Fire Department budget is a large part as well as the ongoing process of revenue and expenditure monitoring. The division provides clerical support for the entire department. The support staff maintains all records, files, and employee time records. The staff also coordinates public relations and educational activities as well as word processing and mail distribution functions.

State & Federal Programs & Standards

The state and federal governments as well as the firefighters’ collective bargaining agreement have mandated new programs and standards. With these new standards there are:
  • Certain training packages that must be delivered
  • Certification processes that must be met
  • Standards that must be adhered to
Accurate documentation must be prepared for all aspects of these programs.
