
AGS Automotive Systems is an automotive manufacturing company which has over 60 years of experience in the manufacturing of automotive components, specifically related to impact system assemblies, stamping, and complex welded assemblies. All of AGS U.S. manufacturing is located in Sterling Heights.
J2 Management Group is a Canadian holding company that owns two automotive manufacturing companies in the US and Canada which operate under the AG Simpson (AGS) name. What began as a printing equipment repair business in 1947 in Scarborough, Ontario has grown to a manufacturing footprint of more than a million and a half square feet. The company is comprised of six manufacturing locations; three of which are located in Canada, and three of which are located in Michigan.
AGS is a full-service supplier, with capabilities in stamping, plating, coating, welding, sequencing, and assembly. AGS supplies bumper systems and body-in-white structural modules to GM, Chrysler, and several Tier 1 customers. AGS’s breadth of operations is very extensive, and many of its programs are exercised at several locations to provide maximum service and optimal value to customers.
In 2012, the Company was awarded a $900,000 MBDP performance-based grant for the expansion of 90 new jobs in Sterling Heights, Michigan at its 18 1⁄2 Mile facility. AGS successfully closed out this grant agreement, meeting all required milestones, and has exceeded the projected 90 new jobs, bringing the total closer to 300. AGS is leading in best practices in the area of refugee employment. 80% of AGS new employees are Iraqi refugees from the local Sterling Heights area
The Company is competing for a new contract to produce OEM automotive components. To support this new work, AGS plans to construct a 20,000 square foot expansion at its current Sterling Drive South chrome plating facility. This Sterling Heights location is where AGS will house its new equipment lines. The project will result in the development of 50 new jobs and $9,000,000 in capital investment. AGS has accepted a $300,000 performance-based grant from the State of Michigan. City Development and Economic Development have been working on this project with AGS to ensure it can expand the facility in a timely manner to meet contract needs.
