The Sterling Heights Fire Department kicks off the 2015 Fire Prevention Week, October 4-10, with its annual Open House on Sunday, October 4 at Fire Station 4 located at 12850 15 Mile Road, adjacent to Baumgartner Park. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to join the firefighters to continue this popular fire education program that attracted record crowds last year. This event includes activities for children and adults, demonstrations, various displays and refreshments.

This year’s theme "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep!" focuses on making sure there are working smoke detectors in every bedroom in a home. Nearly half of all residential fire deaths result from fires during the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., according to the National Fire Prevention Association

"Smoke detectors save lives," said Fire Chief Chris Martin. "It is very important that, not only should you have several working smoke detectors in your house, but that you frequently test them and change the batteries. Fire safety should become part of your family's routine, including developing and practicing escape plans in case of a fire."
