According to City Clerk Mark Carufel, Election Inspectors process voters at an assigned polling location, assist voters with voting procedures and the operation of voting equipment. Election Inspectors also complete forms, process voters using a laptop computer, maintain order in the polls and work under the direction of a Precinct Chairperson. Election Inspectors need to follow written and verbal directions, maintain accurate records and work as a team throughout Election Day. Candidates for the position must be registered voters in the State of Michigan. High school students aged 16 and 17 are eligible to be Election Inspectors but will not work more than 10 hours on Election Day. Qualified applicants must have recent and relevant experience operating a laptop computer.

High School students are paid $80 for Election Day when not volunteering for service credit. Inspectors are also paid $20 for each training course attended.

“This position is a great way for residents to become involved in this community’s democratic process,” Carufel said.

Applicants may apply in person at the City Clerk’s Office, located on the upper level of Sterling Heights’ City Hall, 40555 Utica Road (corner of Utica and Dodge Park Roads), between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
