The Homebuilders Association of Southeast Michigan (HBA) recently announced City of Sterling Heights Building Official Mike Viazanko as its 2016 Building Official of the Year.
The Sterling Heights City Council honored Viazanko at its Dec. 20 meeting for this outstanding award and his continued leadership.
The HBA is one of 26 local homebuilder associations
around the state, part of a professional trade association, chartered in 1948
with the National Association of Home Builders. These associations work to
positively promote the building industry and impact legislative, regulatory and
legal issues affecting housing affordability. The selection criteria for 2016 Building Official of the Year
include outstanding contributions and accomplishments over an extended period
of time. Recipients of this honor
provide innovative service to their communities and have demonstrated personal
and professional achievement. Building Officials of the Year are first and
foremost cutting edge thinkers and inspiring professionals.
In recognizing Mike with this distinguished award,
the HBA cited his achievements. “Since taking the helm of one of the largest
building departments in Michigan, Mike has focused on creating collaborative
working relationships with building professionals,” the HBA cited in Viazanko’s
award presentation. “He encourages open dialogue, especially in the
pre-construction phase of building. He takes particular interest in all future
economic development projects in the city so issues can be discussed in the
early drawing phase.”
Sterling Heights Mayor Michael C. Taylor said
Viazanko’s receipt of such a prestigious award comes as no surprise, as he's
known throughout the City as a reliable member of the City of Sterling Heights
team.
“On behalf of the entire City Council, we’d like to
congratulate Mike Viazanko on being named Building Official of the Year,”
Taylor said. “Mike continues to prove time and time again he’s an asset to the
City. Whether he’s innovating our processes or troubleshooting an issue, Mike
is a valuable leader. He’s incredibly deserving of this award.”
Mr. Viazanko’s Sterling Heights’ colleagues were
thrilled to hear of his award, said City Development Director Denice
Gerstenberg. Under Viazanko’s direction, the Building Department has flourished
despite challenges during his tenure.
“Mike has a positive attitude and can always be counted
on to contribute for the betterment of the community,” Gerstenberg said.
