Monday, November 6, 2017 8:15 am to 1:30 pm The program began in 2001 when then SH Police Officer Aaron Burgess was approached by Tony Eckrich with an offer to utilize his business to teach high school students about the dangers of drunk driving.
Working with Kart 2 Kart owner, Tony Eckrich, an alcohol reduction program was developed that encompassed all aspects of an OWI Traffic Crash; from the on-scene investigation by the police, the emergency procedures of paramedics and firefighters, the penalties imposed by the court, insurance rates and finally to the impact made on the life of a OWI victim. A unique educational tool with this program is the use of Fatal Vision, or “Drunk Goggles”, being worn while conducting Field Sobriety Tests and driving go-carts. In 2012 we started a partnership with Best Buy in Utica. The Best Buy Geek Squad will introduce a “texting and karting” exercise in which the students have to drive the karts on an obstacle course while texting.
For this year we will remind the students of some of the most vulnerable road users, motorcyclists, to the dangers of drunk, drugged, drowsy or distracted drivers.
This interactive program is set up around High School Homecoming time and start-of-the-year events to reinforce the dangers of Operating While Impaired, Intoxicated or distracted.
For the fall of 2017 approximately 55 students from Henry Ford II, Stevenson, Sterling Heights, Eisenhower and Utica High Schools along with Cranbrook have been invited to attend the event. It is our hope that these students will take the lessons and experiences learned at this program and encourage their fellow students, friends and family not to drink and drive or text and drive.
