The Sterling Heights Fire Department is looking for candidates to take part in the Civilian Fire Academy beginning this fall.
This is an opportunity for residents to get an inside look at the operation of the Sterling Heights Fire Department and get a taste of what it is like to be a Firefighter/Paramedic. Due to the hands-on nature of the program, the class size is limited and applications must be submitted for consideration.
The program will run for five weeks, on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 5. At the conclusion of the academy, there will be a graduation ceremony at the Fire Department Open House on Oct. 7.
“We are excited to bring back the Civilian Fire Academy, which has not been held since 2008,” said Fire Chief Chris Martin. “Past Civilian Academy classes have been well-received by those who took part — and it’s an excellent way for residents to get an understanding about the operation and capabilities of their fire department.“
This program will have some components that will be physically demanding, yet safety of the participants will be a primary focus. It is important that interested candidates keep this in mind.
Participants will take part in:
- Vehicle extrication
- Fire hose use
- Search and rescue
- Fire extinguishers
- Ground ladder use
- Department operations
- EMS delivery
Participants must be at least 18 years of age at the beginning of the academy and residents of the City of Sterling Heights. Application deadline is Aug. 1. Please submit your application and waiver form, fully completed, by the deadline either by email to cmartin@sterling-heights.net or mail to:
Fire Station 5
Attn: Civilian Fire Academy
41625 Ryan Road
Sterling Heights, MI 48314
Accepted applicants will be notified by the Fire Department by Aug. 13.
