[ARCHIVED] City of Sterling Heights Official Statement regarding Van Dyke Target store closure

The City of Sterling Heights was notified this week that the Target located at 35700 Van Dyke, located just north of 15 Mile Road, will be closing effective June 1.

Target corporate reports it will be offering positions to all 136 employees and expects that 95 percent of the Van Dyke store’s employees will continue their employment at a new store.

The 100,000 square-foot store sits on a 15-acre parcel, which will be ripe for redevelopment. The site at Van Dyke and 15 Mile is currently home to a number of development projects, including the new Christian Financial Credit Union headquarters valued at $12 million along with two new hotels and multiple commercial developments underway. The City is collaborating with owners, Wichita, Kansas-based Walter Morris Companies, on redevelopment opportunities.

The Van Dyke Corridor boasts some of the best demographics in Southeast Michigan, with daily traffic counts exceeding 60,000 cars, a household income at a desirable $67,000, a daily workforce of 40,000 employees, and an overall residential population of 100,000 — all within just three miles of this location.

“The City is disappointed in the Target closure — but has no doubt the space will be quickly redeveloped given the amount of construction activity currently taking place throughout the City but especially in the area of 15 Mile and Van Dyke,” said Sterling Heights Mayor Michael C. Taylor. “I’m very relieved to hear the employees will be offered alternate employment with Target and no one will be left without a job.”

Sterling Heights’ Economic Development Manager Luke Bonner said he’s confident in the City’s ability to work with the site’s current owner and help secure the right development for this premium location.

“Sterling Heights is completely in-tune with the change occurring in bricks and mortar retail; we have researched this area greatly as we prepare for a new vision for Lakeside Mall,” Bonner said. “The homework we’ve done in advance of today’s announcement will ultimately allow us to assist in the transition of this location to a new and productive use.

The City of Sterling Heights is also home to a Target store at 2310 Metro Parkway, located just off Dequindre Road and 16 Mile, or Metro Parkway, which will remain open.
