On November 1, 2017, the Sterling Heights Fire Department began providing transportation of the sick and injured within the City to area hospitals by implementing the fire department based transportation service.
Four fire department ambulances were available each day to handle incidents.
In the first full year of the service, over 10,000 patients were transported to area hospitals, exceeding the original projections and necessitating an additional ambulance to meet the demand. The implementation of a fifth ambulance will allow the department to better manage run volumes and ensure that each patient receives the best possible care. The program will continue to be analyzed for improvements to both quality and efficiency at every level.
According to Fire Chief Chris Martin, “This program has been a huge success and a significant improvement of the service provided to the residents of Sterling Heights. Even adding the 5th ambulance, the program will continue to be self-sustaining with expenditures fully covered by program revenue.”
