Biography

Councilwoman Maria G Schmidt was first elected in November of 2003 after being appointed earlier that year in February 2003.

Maria works full time for Warren Consolidated Schools as a Voc-Ed Paraprofessional in the Health Science program. She graduated from Bishop Foley High School and attended Southeast Oakland Vocational School and Oakland Community College, and she has worked for more than 30 years in the medical field.

Maria is a member of the Warren Consolidated Schools Health Advisory Board and the regional representative on the Michigan Occupational Special Populations Association (MOSPA) executive board. She is also a certified Basic Life Support and Heartsaver instructor with the American Heart Association.

She is a graduate of both the Police and Fire civilian academies and enjoys volunteering for The Children’s Tumor Foundation of Michigan, the American Heart Association's Heart Walk and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She served as a member of the organizing committee for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Sterling Heights from 2005-2006, and after 14 straight years as a Carleton and Sterling Heights Band booster, she has passed on the reigns following the graduation of both her children. Her time spent on the band executive board was most fulfilling because it was about the kids and helping them have the best possible experience.

Maria has lived in Sterling Heights since 1994 with her husband Bob and children Jordan and Natalie.  In her free time, Maria enjoys spending time with family and friends.
